Why should I test my well?

Unwanted substances known as contaminants can get into private well water. Private-well owners are responsible for testing and maintaining their wells.

Contaminants in your drinking water may lead to health problems. This makes private-well management an important health concern.

It’s important to test regularly because many contaminants may not cause any change in your water’s taste, color, or smell. Testing is not required but is encouraged.

What should I test for?

  • Test once a year
  • And, if there is a change in smell, taste, or color
  • Test once a year
  • And, before a pregnant person drinks the water
  • Test every well once
  • And, yearly if arsenic was previously detected
