Survey Data and Biospecimen Ready to Use

SHOW has collected health survey data from around 5500 Wisconsin residents since 2008, including data on minors (n=980 from 2014-2019) and biospecimen from roughly 4500 of those participants. Our data include objective physical measurements, data on the social determinants of health, and subjective data on how participants perceive their own well-being. Through our data request or biospecimen request processes, you can use these data in epidemiologic analysis for publication, in justifications for grant applications, in student research projects, or in biological assay development. Please see our data and biospecimen pages for more information.

SHOW Participants represent the entire state of Wisconsin. Our services and data span the state while also including traditionally underrepresented communities in health research such as people living in rural areas and African Americans.

Study and Grant Development

SHOW can assist investigators at any point in the process of project development. We prefer to begin working with investigators pre-award, but we can also begin collaboration after a grant has been submitted or post-award. The SHOW team includes epidemiologists, statisticians, program and project managers, field team managers, and experienced field staff who can assist you at every step in the planning process and help make your study implementation and data collection work efficiently.

SHOW differs from other health survey resources in Wisconsin because we have, a statewide representative cohort of participants, existing data, stored biospecimen, validated instruments, longstanding community partnerships, trained field scientists, and experienced administrative staff that can come together to support your research.

New Data and Biospecimen Collection

SHOW can effectively recruit study participants and collect data in specific populations of interest or from our statewide representative cohort who meet specified study criteria for a particular ancillary study research question.

SHOW Core has participants from 63 counties in Wisconsin, with an intentional oversampling from underserved populations in the City of Milwaukee for greater representation. SHOW’s field scientists include phlebotomists and interviewers trained in standardized interviewing, computer-assisted interviewing, and taking standardized physical measurements. We also have an administrative team that can handle online and mail-based surveys, data entry, appointment scheduling, sample shipping, and problem-solving with participants. Finally, our lab team has experience systematically receiving, aliquoting, logging, and storing biological samples with our Freezerworks ® system in the SHOW biorepository, located on campus in the McArdle Lab building. These resources housed at SHOW can be leveraged to collect new data via a SHOW Ancillary Study. Please request a consultation for more information.

Fees for Services

SHOW now uses a fee-for-service model for all of the services listed above. Gathering quality survey data and biospecimen from around the state and offering high-quality services require resources from funders as well as cost-sharing from investigators using our services.

SHOW’s standard rate for data & analytic services is $123/hr for those within the UW, with a 15% discount for Cancer Center Members ($104.55/hr) and a 15% non-UW surcharge ($141.45/hr).

Ancillary Studies

SHOW Ancillary Studies have built on the SHOW infrastructure and contributed to the richness of our data, biospecimen, and findings. Ancillary studies have ranged from focus groups on physical activity to statewide microbiome sample collection on hundreds of individuals, and many studies in between. Prior SHOW Ancillary Studies have greatly contributed to translational scientific knowledge and public health surveillance.

An Ancillary Study is any study that partners with SHOW to leverage SHOW study development or data collection services and brings funding from outside the existing SHOW funding sources.

The following panels describe areas of support SHOW offers to Ancillary Study Projects, learn more about what we offer and past studies on our Ancillary Studies page.
