IRB Approvals for Using SHOW Services

Use of SHOW data and services may be subject to Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, this guide is intended to help investigators and students new to working with SHOW get started.

Use SHOW’s public use data sets

No IRB needed, complete form on website (add link) and you will receive email with instruction on how to access the data

  • SHOW Wave I (2008-2013 ) Public Use Data

Use SHOW’s non-public use data sets (includes merging non-public use data sets with public use data sets)

Cost – SHOW will provide up to 3 instruments from a single SHOW Wave for free. If additional linkages are desired, please meet with our data team to discuss

UW student, post-doc, academic staff, and/or investigator, scientist, professor need to acquire UW health sciences IRB exemption (provide link to document/instructions)

Non-UW researcher, clinician, investigator, student -> need to acquire IRB exemption from your institution and provide us a copy of your IRB application and exemption status letter /approval

Link SHOW data to other publicly available surveillance data

E.g. Cancer registry, immunization data, GIS data based on participant’s residence such as roadways, coal plants, green space, air pollution from Tigerline files, WI DNR, WI DATCP, EPA shapefiles

Cost – SHOW may conduct linkages to publicly available data for an hourly analytical charge; reduced cost if you conduct linkage yourself

  • IRB approval must be acquired through investigators own institution.
  • UW affiliation – seek from UW – Health Sciences IRB approval
  • Non-UW affiliated, seek IRB exemption from your IRB which covers “HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH”
  • Depending on scope, may be able to acquire IRB exemption if paying SHOW to conduct linkage
  • If conducting linkage, yourself, will need IRB approval to come to SHOW headquarters and work on our secure computer and drives under supervision; request SHOW assistance when drafting IRB application

Conduct an ancillary study with SHOW,  collect additional survey data or biosamples on SHOW participants, or recruit new, non-SHOW participants for research purposes?

  • Need to get IRB approval from you own institution. If UW affiliation – seek from UW – Health Sciences IRB approval; if non-UW affiliated, seek IRB exemption from your IRB which covers “HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH”
